The Reef host renowned cycling squad Garmin Transition
Thor Hushvod, a world road champion, and his team choose the Reef Resort as their home-away-from-home this past December as they descended on the island for a pre-season cycling event. The team included Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world-time trial championship silver medallist, David Millar, from Scotland; top sprinter, Tyler Farrar, from the United States; as well as former top-five Tour de France finisher, Christian Vande Velde, of the United States plus top-10 finisher, Ryder Hesjedal, of Canada.
The Cayman Pro Cycling Camp 2010, a three-day event, was a huge coup for Grand Cayman Island. Slipstream Sports, owners and promoters of world renowned, Team Garmin Transitions, announced the team would be participating in this event with a few big reveals; the new team jerseys and bikes. On day one the team frolicked with the stingrays at Stingray City, and attended a private meet and greet with their sponsors at The Reef Resort. Day two included a fitting for the team's new Cervelo bicycles and a look at the new team uniforms. Additionally team-building exercises were held at The Reef Resort, which included volleyball and kayaking. The day ended with a delicious dinner at the Lighthouse Restaurant. Day three culminated in an island treasure hunt for the team, a warm welcome from the governor, and visits to a variety of island activities; a Dolphin Discovery encounter, a helicopter tour with Cayman Island Helicopters, and an evening at the island's newest attraction the Cayman Motor Museum.
The folks at The Reef Resort, one of the events major sponsors, were not surprised that Slipstream chose the East End and The Reef Resort as their top-pick for events and overnight stays. For the past few years The Reef Resort has been hosting a popular cycling event, The Reefatlon, that has caught the attention of a few pros. "The East End of the island is ideal for road racing as smooth paved roads give way to beachside cycling and minimal traffic," states Tom McCullum, spokesperson on behalf of the Reef Resort. "This is the start of something big in the world of cycling and we at The Reef Resort, are honored to be bringing this caliber of event to the island," adds McCullum.
