CISC Enjoys the Breeze at The Reef Resort
GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (February 14, 2011) - Sailing aficionados enjoyed the breeze at the Reef resort during the fifth annual Captain Leroy Watson East End regatta last month.
"This was another great success and everyone agreed the new venue at the Reef Resort was ideal," said Cayman Island Sailing Club manager Rick Caley.
The event was held over the weekend on January 22 and 23. Caley said sailors were challenged by the light variable winds Saturday, and even stronger winds and waves on Sunday.
Eighteen youth raced in the Pico class, and 11 boats participated in the Laser standard class race.
Caley said racing was tight between the kids on Saturday. In the end, the first place Pico class trophy went to Florence Allen and Polly Serpell. Camilo Bernal and Thomas Bishop took second place, and Allena Rankine, Aiden Hew and Harrison Hew placed third.
"Unfortunately the onshore swell and stronger winds on Sunday meant that there was no racing, but the beach and pools at the Reef provided alternative diversion," said Caley.
New coach Kelvin Browne displayed an aggressive and fast sailing style, which won him the first place trophy in the Laser standard class. Charlie Grover took home second place trophy and Chris Delaney was third.
Also, Eduardo Bernal took top honors in the Laser Radial Class.
Honorable mentions include Donald and Health Care Pharmacy for sponsoring the event, and Peta Adams, Andrew Moon and Mark Macfee for performed duties as the race committee.
"Also a special thanks to all at the Reef resort who went out of their way to make the event an enjoyable experience for everyone. We have already asked them to keep a block of rooms vacant for us same time next year!" said Caley.
