About Grand Cayman Island
Really Want to Know? Better Go!
The first Cayman Island “vacation” came about when Christopher Columbus was blown off course en route to Hispaniola and landed on these islands. In the 500 years since, this beautiful setting has changed dramatically in some ways and not at all in others. No longer inhabited solely by turtles, large lizards and other wildlife, the Caymans have nonetheless retained much of their native beauty.

Christopher Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands in 1503. He named the islands Las Tortugas because of the abundance of turtles that inhabited the nearby waters. By 1530, the islands were being called the "Caymanas," which derived from a Carib Indian name for crocodiles, who were known to be abundant around Cayman Island’s beaches at the time.
